Carolyn Chan (LRSM, BMUS)
The Hong Kong-born pianist is classically trained at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music (Bachelor of Music Performance Piano), learning from Stephanie McCallum. “Carolyn is a musician in maturity, technique and musical understanding with graceful and stylish performance presentation.” Stephanie McCallum acclaimed. Carolyn has also had masterclass with International pianist Piers Lane. During her studies, she performed in masterclasses with visiting artists, public recitals, piano concertos and chamber music.
Unlike many of her contemporaries, she did not continue her musical path in the classical world. Instead, after her graduation, she was invited to participate in the legendary Canto-pop singer Sam Hui’s Concert, held in the Hong Kong Coliseum and also the Sydney Entertainment Centre as the solo pianist. In the same year, she gave her first debut solo transcribed piano recording and score “Carolyn Plays The Piano Collection of Hayao Miyazaki”.
Her interpretation of music is always minimal but at the same time classy and timeless. “Beauty and soul of the melody always comes first as the main role whereas delicate technique and skills supports the music to provide color and imagination,” she once restated in an interview. In her second piano album “Touch”, it features Carolyn’s own re-arrangement “Speak Softly Love” from the movie Godfather, “The Heart asks pleasure first” from the piano, “Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence” etc.
Known for her admirable work ethic and charismatic presentation, Carolyn has been invited to perform over thousands of campaigns, many of them involve leading world figures and tycoons in town. As a regular guest at the city’s most prestigious venues including concert halls, exhibition centers, piano competitions and luxury hotels, her performances are programmatic and modern classical. “If you want to deliver a remarkable virtuosic performance, the way you approach music has to be changed,” Carolyn recalled, “I precisely select, transcribe and adjust my music so that my audiences can easily digest and be inspired.”
